Welcome
The Ethno-ornithology World Alliance (EWA) is a network of people dedicated to birds, local knowledge in many languages, and all the connections to place that grow from these relationships. An alliance of researchers, local experts, and conservation practitioners, we work to help birds and diverse knowledge systems flourish.
We are individuals, communities, and institutions exploring the interconnections
between people and birds. See what our members are up to:
BirdLife International
BirdLife International is the largest international Partnership for nature conservation.
Ethno-ornithology World Atlas

Avian Folk Names of Europe -- The Michel Desfayes Collection
Explore the Michel Desfayes Collection of thousands of folk names for European birds. Starting in 2015, EWA has worked to digitize the Desfayes Collection of European folk names for birds with a searchable interface. Here you can search the CD-Rom version that accompanies Desfayes' two volumes.
Birds of the World -- EWA Collaboration
EWA is partnering with Birds of the World to develop material for their species sections called 'Human Relationships With Birds'. Our focus is to facilitate local and Indigenous authors' contributions to this powerful platform on comprehensive life history information on birds.
